She's my favorite character from the book。 (I'll probably upload another post talking more about this book!)And talking (writing) about characters, I want to say that some of them annoyed me, like Emmy's biological father and Vee。 It's obvious why Emmy's father is annoying to me, and to anyone that has read the book。 Because those things do happen in real life, and it's very hard for those people who suffer from it。 I won't say what I'm referring to, but the ones who have read the book know exactly what I'm talking about。 I know it's not something everyone wants to read about, or even heard about。 But I'm glad, even grateful, that the author has written very well how's the relationship between Emmy and her biological father and how Emmy feels that way。 I empathised a lot with her and I understood her so so well。 You should read this book! I was hoping for more from this book。 The romance is just not as strong as the author's previous works, so it comes off as more of a women's lit book rather than straight romance。Also, I felt that there was a lot of build-up with not a lot of pay-off。 Like, Emmy would be dreading a phone call or conversation and then the next scene would be, "Well, that went better than I'd expected。" or days have gone by。 We just don't get any depth in situations or characters。Still, the writing itself is solid I was hoping for more from this book。 The romance is just not as strong as the author's previous works, so it comes off as more of a women's lit book rather than straight romance。Also, I felt that there was a lot of build-up with not a lot of pay-off。 Like, Emmy would be dreading a phone call or conversation and then the next scene would be, "Well, that went better than I'd expected。" or days have gone by。 We just don't get any depth in situations or characters。Still, the writing itself is solid and enjoyable。 I've enjoyed many of the author's other stories, so hopefully this won't be more than a single anomaly。 Every is allowed to have a bad day, or bad book。 I still look forward to whatever the author comes up with next。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I always enjoy the comedy in Portia MacIntosh's books, and that was here in abundance almost from the start。 Most of it came in the form of Emmy's family dynamic。 And for me, that was the highlight of this story。 I also loved the parallels with Game of Thrones in her acting career。 As a nerd, these jokes made me giggle。 I LOVED the awkwardness of Emmy and Scott's reunion, while the search for a script and the subsequent filthy panto draft had me howling laughing (please, please give us more of t I always enjoy the comedy in Portia MacIntosh's books, and that was here in abundance almost from the start。 Most of it came in the form of Emmy's family dynamic。 And for me, that was the highlight of this story。 I also loved the parallels with Game of Thrones in her acting career。 As a nerd, these jokes made me giggle。 I LOVED the awkwardness of Emmy and Scott's reunion, while the search for a script and the subsequent filthy panto draft had me howling laughing (please, please give us more of that script though!)That said, I found Emmy's initial career dilemma irrelevant for most of the story。 It was supposed to be her reason for returning home, but we also had the family bereavement, and, considering she'd said she was going to keep her head down for a while, there seemed to be little of that once she was home。 Emmy takes selfies with anyone who asks, rehearses daily at a well publicised pantomime yet doesn't have a single pap or (even local) reporter on her tail (which you can guarantee would happen in this country, given the tabloid press and their voracious appetite for chasing scandals)。 Then we don't even learn more about the scandal until right near the end。Unfortunately, I felt that the romance suffered because there were so many other storylines going on concurrently。 It took over a third of the book to get to Emmy meeting any real potential romantic lead, and even then, it didn't seem clear who that romantic lead was supposed to be。 Neither Emmy's interactions with Scott or Tel screamed love interest。 With Scott, she's mostly talking about the past, and with Tel it's how 'nice' he is, how skillful he is at things。 It all just felt a bit muddled and there was very little chemistry。 Consequently, the eventual romantic hook-up felt rushed and bland。 I also found Emmy a bit judgy at times。 She flip-flops between sweet and bitchy。 But even that knowledge didn't prepare me for the weird resentment being tossed at her at the party。 It all just felt a bit sudden and forced。I think there was the potential for a really good rom-com here, but because there was SO much going on, nothing was focused on long enough for me to become truly invested in the characters。*Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to leave an honest review* 。。。more

What a great character Emmy is, her exit scene from the fantasy show she is a star of is a rather memorable opening to the book, and seemed to be the tip of the iceberg as to who she really is。 There are all manner of interesting family dynamics at play, and I loved her auntie Vee who was hilarious and kept trying to get the pair of them into all sorts of situations。 Then there is her estranged father, half siblings she feels she barely knows, an older sister who she doesn't seem to have the eas What a great character Emmy is, her exit scene from the fantasy show she is a star of is a rather memorable opening to the book, and seemed to be the tip of the iceberg as to who she really is。 There are all manner of interesting family dynamics at play, and I loved her auntie Vee who was hilarious and kept trying to get the pair of them into all sorts of situations。 Then there is her estranged father, half siblings she feels she barely knows, an older sister who she doesn't seem to have the easiest of dynamics with。 Not to mention her old friends and old crush when she returns to Marram Bay for a bit。 For fans of Portia MacIntosh you may be like me rather happy to see Marram Bay as the setting for most of this book, especially given it's a fabulous location at Christmas, and this book is set in the run up to Christmas, complete with a panto。 I'd have loved it even more had we had snippets from the panto script, as I love a good panto - oh yes I do!! Although it is a familiar setting, it is a completely standalone book, so if you are new to this fabulous author then please don't worry。 This was a joy to read, it kept me entertained at all times, and I really liked the character of Tel, who kept seeming to crop up around the place, and the interactions between him and Emmy are fabulous。 This is such an enjoyable read and another hit from the always funny Portia MacIntosh。 Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily。 。。。more

DNF’d at 41%。The writing was good, and I definitely want to check out more books from this author。 However, even at 41% nothing romantic has happened。 The love interest was only seen about twice and there was hardly any interaction。 I was also expecting a Christmas book and there were no Christmas vibes in this story。There also seemed like there were so many subplots in this story。 I really just wanted a cute Christmas romance, and unfortunately I wasn’t getting that from this。

The blurb for this was interesting but possibly not entirely accurate once you start reading。 It was a bit slow in parts but I did like the focus on Emmy and her reconnecting with family。 I would have liked more time spent on building the romance with her final choice though。 A light, easy read (3 ⭐️)。

I was rooting for Emmy to find her happiness but something was lacking here just a bit。 I love when I read a book and I instantly fall in love with the characters but that didn't happen here。 Sure, I liked Emmy but I didn't love her。 She was somewhat wishy washy and I just wanted her to toughen up a bit。 The other characters weren't fleshed out enough to care about them。 Tel was, without a doubt, my favorite part of this novel。 Also I should mention that a lot of the British humor in this one flew right over my head which is obviously a *me* problem but I hate feeling like I'm missing the punchline。 While that all sounds negative, it shouldn't。 This really was a cute, sweet, and uplifting story that I am glad to have read。 I would gladly recommend this to rom-com lovers。 3。5 stars! Emmy is kind of a big deal。 She has been on a fantasy tv show as one of the front runners for the last six years (think Game of Thrones) but now she has been killed off, and her beloved grandfather has died。 She returns to her hometown to help out her family and to say goodbye to her grandfather, not able to tell anyone about losing her job (due to an iron clad non-disclosure agreement。 While Emmy is worrying about where her next job will come from, her old high school friends are worrying about Emmy is kind of a big deal。 She has been on a fantasy tv show as one of the front runners for the last six years (think Game of Thrones) but now she has been killed off, and her beloved grandfather has died。 She returns to her hometown to help out her family and to say goodbye to her grandfather, not able to tell anyone about losing her job (due to an iron clad non-disclosure agreement。 While Emmy is worrying about where her next job will come from, her old high school friends are worrying about the old community theater being shut down。 Hoping that a play with a big name starring will raise funds to keep the theater alive, her friends talk her into staying in town awhile and helping out。Her mother and sisters are also having issues deciding what to do with their father’s run down home。 Emmy offers to buy it from them and intends to renovate it and sell eventually, giving everyone time to properly empty it and to say goodbye to the old place, Emmy has her hands full with all of the promises she has made to everyone, and then in walks the guy who got away。 Scott and Emmy have circled around each other since they were young, but always somehow got the timing wrong, With Emmy cast as the heroine in the play they are putting on, and Scott as the hero, is this finally the time they’ll get together? This book was a fun romance that kept you guessing。 The cast of characters is large, and each and every one of them is flushed out just enough to make you care about them and what they are hiding (and it seems like just about everyone of them has a secret or is up to something)。 A very enjoyable read!Thank you so much to Boldwood Books and Portia Macintosh for gifting me an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review! 。。。more
